These are most of the beer tasted during the above period - that is, those beers I wrote a
short comment about. Just a few beer, without rating and comment, are missing in this file.
Of course you can find all the beers in the Database in all its formats.
The comments are the ones I wrote at the time of the tasting; the rating is instead the updated one.
Sometimes I don't rate a beer at my first taste, and sometimes I just give a "+"; and for the moment I don't give the Lambics any score. See Notes in the main database page.
12/01/1999 GIRARDIN KRIEK (GIRARDIN); LAMBIC; KRIEK; BEL; 5.0 alcvol%;
Very good traditional Kriek lambic, a bit tart as demanded by the style but not as sour as Cantillon.

21/01/1999 TIPOPILS (BIRRIFICIO ITALIANO); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); PILSEN; ITA; 5.2 alcvol%; voto:8.00;
Another brewpub. I liked the Tipopils, malty and hoppy, tasty and drinkable.The Nigra has a liquorice finish, the Bibock is drinkable but a bit bland for the style (note added in 2004: either the beer or my taste has changed... now Bibock is one of my favourite beers)
08/02/1999 KILKENNY STRONG (SMITHWICK'S); ALE; IRISH RED; IRL;

16/02/1999 JACOBITE ALE (TRAQUAIR HOUSE); ALE; STRONG SCOTCH; SCO; 8.0 alcvol%;
Quite peculiar Scottish strong ale. Full bodied, roasted, almost flat and with sometartness to result almost a sweet-and-sour beer

Belgian ale almost in a barley wine style. To be tasted again.
20/03/1999 ENAMEL DUBBEL (ROMAN); ALE; DOUBLE; BEL; 6.5 alcvol%;

15/06/1999 DUNKLE PERLE (FELDSCHLOSSCHEN); LAGER, DARK (SCURA); MUNCH. DUNK; GER; 5.5 alcvol%;
None of the above beers was unforgettable the most appreciated has been maybe Dunkle Perle, malty and sweet but not too much.
19/06/1999 BIONDA (BUSALLA); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); ITA; 5.0 alcvol%;
I could taste the basic beer of this new micro before their official opening this lager has a slight yeast flavor and is enjoyable but not exceptional.
20/06/1999 PIETRA NOEL (PIETRA); SPECIAL; CHESTNUT (CASTAGNA); FRA; 6.0 alcvol%;
Good beer also in this special version the chestnut flavor is quite subtle.
20/06/1999 SUPER BALADIN (BALADIN); ALE; ITA; 8.0 alcvol%; voto:8.75;
20/06/1999 AMBREE DU BALADIN (BALADIN); ALE; GARDE; ITA; 6.2 alcvol%; voto:8.25;

20/06/1999 ISAAC (BALADIN); WHEAT (GRANO); BLANCHE-WIT; ITA; 4.6 alcvol%; voto:8.25;
These are perhaps the best italian beers, produced by a brewpub/microbrewery devoted exclusively to top fermentation. The Blonde may recall a Pilsener because of the hop flavor, but is actually an ale brewed to seem a pale lager. Isaac is a belgian style white beer, I think it is very good and stilistically correct although Teo, the brewer, prefers it (and produces it) less spiced and less sweet than for example Hoegaarden. This beer is also available bottle conditioned. The Brune is a tasty and balanced Stout, not far from Guinness, served under nitrogen. The Ambree was my favorite (together with Super Baladin): fruity (some cherry flavor and aroma) malty and full bodied, but balanced enough to be highly dinkable (I would have never stopped drinking it :-)). Super Baladin is the top product of the standard production, and is available both on draught and bottle conditioned. The two version are different enough, the draught one is rounded and full bodied and remind me of a strong scotch ale (for example Scotch de Silly), the bottled is less sweet and more complex.
22/07/1999 ZLATOROG PIVO (LASKO); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); SLO; 12.0P;
23/07/1999 UNION AMBER (UNION); LAGER, AMBER (ROSSA); SLO; 5.5 alcvol%; 14.0P;
25/07/1999 LASKO (LASKO); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); SLO;
25/07/1999 SMILE (UNION); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); SLO; 5.0 alcvol%; 12.0P;
26/07/1999 TEMNO LASKO (LASKO); LAGER, DARK (SCURA); SLO; 15.0P;
The beer I tasted in Slovenia were of good quality but none of them impressed me particularly I could appreciate a good hop flavor (Slovenian hops are quite good)
26/07/1999 CITTAVECCHIA CHIARA (CITTAVECCHIA); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); PILSEN; ITA; voto:7.50;
26/07/1999 CITTAVECCHIA ROSSA (CITTAVECCHIA); LAGER, AMBER (ROSSA); MARZEN-OCTOBER; ITA; 13.7P; voto:7.75;
Two beer I could taste almost as a "preview" (directly from the maturation tanks) in a brand new micro recently opened by an ex-homebrewer near Trieste. I particularly enjoyed the amber, a Vienna-style lager a bit on the dry side (Michele, the brewer, proposes to match it with seafood and fish) but at the same time very tasty.
01/08/1999 FEUERIO TROPFEN (HABERECKL); LAGER, DARK (SCURA); DOPPELBOCK; GER; 9.0 alcvol%; 20.0P; voto:7.25;
A good doppelbock less sweet and less caramel tasting than other ones, but with a more powerful bite.
07/08/1999 CAPIT ALE (FIRKIN); ALE; BITTER/PALE; FRA; 5.0 alcvol%;
07/08/1999 FINANCIER ALE (FIRKIN); ALE; BITTER/PALE; FRA; 4.3 alcvol%;
Two ales made in this brewpub, of the same chain as the UK ones: the first one stronger and almost spicy, the other with a light but well detectable hop aroma.
07/08/1999 TRIPLE KARMELIERT (BOSTEELS); ALE; TRIPLE; BEL; 8.0 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
A sweet triple made with three different grains (barley, wheat and spelt)
10/08/1999 ABC STOUT (ASIA PACIFIC); STOUT & PORTER; FOREIGN; SING; 8.1 alcvol%; 17.8P; voto:8.75;
A really good stout in the "foreign" style
14/08/1999 CELIS PALE BOCK (DE SMEDT - CELIS); ALE; BELGIAN PALE; USA; 7.5 alcvol%;
14/08/1999 MAREDSOUS 6 (MOORTGAT); ALE; BEL; 6.8 alcvol%;
Two beers that were alike in some ways good and well done but not so remarkable.
14/08/1999 BURTON ALE (IND COOPE); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.5 alcvol%; voto:+;
Real ale featuring a quite good hop nose.
29/08/1998 FREEDOM PILSENER (FREEDOM); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); PILSEN; ENG; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
16/08/1999 FREEDOM PALE (FREEDOM); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 4.5 alcvol%; voto:+;
16/08/1999 FREEDOM SUMMER ALE (FREEDOM); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 3.0 alcvol%;
16/08/1999 FREEDOM WHEAT (FREEDOM); WHEAT (GRANO); WEIZE; ENG; 5.0 alcvol%;
16/08/1999 BLUEBERRY ALE (FREEDOM); SPECIAL; BLUEBERRY; ENG; 3.6 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
16/08/1999 SOHO RED (FREEDOM); LAGER, AMBER (ROSSA); ENG; 4.6 alcvol%; voto:6.50;
Freedom is a micro based in Fulham, London, that is known for its good and malty Pilsener. Besides tha Fulham brewery, there is also a brewpub in the very center of London I don't know the exact relationship between them, but the brewpub features besides the Pilsener some more creations of the German brewmaster. They offer all the beers they have in small tasting glasses - which is a good idea. Besides the Pilsener (already tasted in 98, I write here again its data) which maybe is still the best one, I tasted a Soho Red and a Pale Ale, balanced and well done a good berry ale, flavourful but not overly sweet and cloying a bit more disappointing to me were Summer Ale, very delicate (maybe too much) and a quite phenolic, almost smokey Weizen. This one was maybe quite in style, but not much pleasant to my own personal taste.
18/08/1999 YOUNG'S OATMEAL STOUT (YOUNG'S); STOUT & PORTER; OATMEAL; ENG; voto:+;
Creamy and smooth, a very good example of this style in my opinion
18/08/1999 SPECIAL LONDON ALE (YOUNG'S); ALE; STRONG BITTER/PALE; ENG; 6.4 alcvol%; voto:9.00;
Probably the best new beer of the year, a real Classic. The new release is bottle conditioned, and that added complexity to this ale, whose good body is just enoughh to balance the fresh and intense aroma and flavour of Kent Goldings hops.
19/08/1999 YOUNG'S BITTER (YOUNG'S); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ENG; 3.7 alcvol%;
On the hoppy and bitter side, with a touch of light sourness good, but not always in perfect shape in all the pubs it is served.
07/08/1999 EPI NOIR (COMPAGNIE DES 3 EPIS); SPECIAL; GRANO SARACENO; FRA; 5.6 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
08/08/1999 GAVROCHE (S. SYLVESTRE); ALE; GARDE; FRA; 8.5 alcvol%; voto:8.25;
09/08/1999 GRAIN D'ORGE (JEANNE D'ARC); ALE; GARDE; FRA; 7.0 alcvol%; voto:7.75;
10/08/1999 ANGELUS (ANNOEULLIN); ALE; GARDE; FRA; 7.0 alcvol%; voto:+;
12/08/1999 CERVOISE LANCELOT (LANCELOT); ALE; GARDE; FRA; 6.0 alcvol%;
24/08/1999 FELIBREE (CANARDOU); ALE; FRA; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:+;
Besides the specialties from nearbty Belgium, it is easy to find in Paris the products of french regional breweries and even microbreweries. The Epi beers are made each using a diffrenet special grain (the one I tasted was made with buckwheat). The other beersd are more or less in the Garde style. Quite good were Gavroche, full bodied, dry and fruity and Grain d'Orge, rounded and a bit like the old Ambree' of italian brewpub Baladin. Interesting were also Angelus and Lancelot, sweet and spicy, and Felibree.
01/09/1999 EAU BENITE (UNIBROUE); ALE; GOLDEN; FRA; 7.7 alcvol%;
Difficult to classify: the label would suggest a blonde ale in Duvel style, but there is also a "Triple" written on it. It seems to me more like a stronger variation of a wit.
26/09/1999 FULLER'S 1845 (FULLER'S); ALE; STRONG BITTER/PALE; ENG; 6.3 alcvol%; voto:9.00;
Very good, another classic bottle-conditioned ale of the same class of Young's SLA, but in this case balance is more towards maltiness.
31/10/1999 NINA (BALADIN); ALE; BITTER/PALE; ITA; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:8.25;
31/10/1999 NOEL DU BALADIN (BALADIN); ALE; BELGIAN STRONG; ITA; 9.0 alcvol%; voto:9.25;
Two new products created by Brewmaster Teo of Baladin. About Noel I can't give a precise rating, having tested the beer as a preview just a few days after bottling. The Nina ale is quite a surprise: a balanced, satisfying and drinkable, english instyle but quite personal at the same time.
26/08/1998 ASASHI SUPER DRY (ASASHI); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); JAP; voto:6.50;
18/08/1999 SAPPORO PREMIUM LAGER (GUINNESS- SAPPORO); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); JAP; 4.5 alcvol%;
15/11/1999 SAPPORO BLACK LABEL (SAPPORO); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); JAP; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:6.25;
16/11/1999 KIRIN ICHIBAN (KIRIN); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); JAP; 5.5 alcvol%;
15/12/1999 YEBISU (SAPPORO); LAGER,PALE (CHIARA); JAP; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
Most beer of Japan - which I tasted there - although generally not exceptional are of good quality, usually on the dry side. The best pale lager is in my opinion the malty Yebisu, a world class dortmunder.
16/11/1999 ASASHI BLACK BEER (ASASHI); LAGER, DARK (SCURA); BLACK; JAP; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:8.50;
19/11/1999 KIRIN STOUT (KIRIN); STOUT & PORTER; FOREIGN; JAP; 8.0 alcvol%; voto:8.25;
09/12/1999 SAPPORO BLACK BEER (SAPPORO); LAGER, DARK (SCURA); BLACK; JAP; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:+;
All Japanese large breweries, besides their mainstream beers, are producing smaller quantities of interesting specialities, such as Alt, Stout and Black Beer. Kirin's Stout is very good and robust, a good example of foreign stout. The Black by Sapporo is not at all bad, but the Asashi one (with a recently modified recipe) is even better, quite complex (from caramel to coffee and chocolate) and really good
18/11/1999 KYOTO ALT (KYOTO); ALE/LAGER HYBRID; ALT; JAP; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:+;
19/11/1999 YACHIYO GOLD ALE (YACHIYO); ALE; JAP; 4.0 alcvol%;
20/11/1999 DOPPO AMBER (DOPPO); LAGER, AMBER (ROSSA); JAP; 5.0 alcvol%;
Also a few beers from micros can now be easily found in Japan. Among the ones I tasted, my preference goes to Kyoto Alt, maybe actually not a true alt but a tasty and balanced ale anyway.
05/12/1999 FLAG PORTER (ELGOODS); STOUT & PORTER; PORTER; ENG; 5.0 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
It is famous because it is produced with an old recipe and using the yeast recovered from a few bottles found on a ship wrecked 150 years ago. It is a good and enjoyable ale though in my opinion it is not a reproduction of the strong and hoppy porters of one or two centuries ago, but a modern and less "aggressive" interpretation.
06/12/1999 OLD GROWLER (NETHERGATE); ALE; OLD/WINTER; ENG; 5.5 alcvol%; voto:8.25;
Quite good. I had a very old bottle, the beer was not in great condition any more but still was quite fruity (cherry?), chocolatey, not too heavy and with a bit of sourness to balance. Nice!
31/12/1999 CAMPBELL XMAS (WHITBREAD); ALE; STRONG SCOTCH; ENG; 8.3 alcvol%; voto:7.25;
Round and full bodied as required for a Scotch Xmas Ale, but to be honest... I can't remember more!
01/01/2000 MILENNIUM 2000 ALE (PITFIELD); ALE; BARLEY WINE; ENG; 10.5 alcvol%; voto:8.75;
A very important beer for me, being at the same time my 1000th tasted beer and the one I choose to greet the Year 2000. A very good beer but not a perfect one curiously, quite similar to a barley wine I brewed myself. Low condition, almost flat (I don't know if this was the intention of the brewer or it is a fault of my bottle) full bodied, lots of caramel and some chocolate almost syrupy but well balanced by strong bitterness and some fruitiness.
